The Very Best, Part 2

"Are you quite sure this is the place?" Gloria asked with a hint of irritation. The summoner held a large umbrella over her head. She loved the sound of rain, but hated being caught outside in it. The two girls were in the middle of a huge rainstorm, standing together at the shore of Lake Erie. It was hard to see anything through the mist.

"Yes, this is the given location of a Pokemon gym." Viola said. The hex maniac wielded an umbrella of her own. From the sound of the driving rain came a different noise, far away and somewhat muffled. Viola couldn't make it out.

"...What do you suppose that is?" asked Gloria.

"Let's find out." Viola said, reaching down for a Pokeball and sending out Froslass. Froslass began freezing the lake, forming an icy path for the girls to follow. Viola crept behind, but Gloria was skeptical and summoned Blue Dragon to ride instead.

The sound again. Through the mist Viola and Gloria could make out a shape up ahead that resembled an island. They pressed on through the rain, and soon it came into view...

It was indeed an island. A small one, with a big boulder in the center. The boulder had an opening big enough for the girls to walk through, so they did, Blue Dragon remaining outside.

As they entered, the sound played one more time, loud and clear.

A trumpet.

In the center of the cave stood a strange robot.

"GYM LEADER SPEAKING." it said with a voice like a trumpet given life. "DESIGNATION IS 'TOP BRASS'. HOENN CONFIRMED."

Gloria, Viola, and Froslass exchanged incredulous looks.

"YOU WOULD NOT BE HERE IF YOU DID NOT WISH TO BATTLE. WHO IS CHALLENGING TOP BRASS TODAY?"

Gloria pointed at Viola.

"VERY GOOD. PREPARE YOUR POKEMON. THIS WILL BE A TRIPLE BATTLE. HOENN CONFIRMED."

Suddenly the room began rapidly filling with water, leaving only a few elevated platforms to stand on. Gloria and Viola hurriedly scrambled onto one. The panel of floor Top Brass stood on rose up to protect it from being submerged. Viola sent out Gourgeist and Cofagrigus to support Froslass, as Top Brass tossed out a few Pokemon of its' own...
"LET THE BATTLE BEGIN. HOENN CONFIRMED."

Water, water everywhere. Gourgeist, Froslass, and Cofagrigus immediately vanish from sight as Wailmer, Wingull, and Tentacool begin spraying ludicrous amounts of water. Viola and Gloria gaped at the sight of hundreds of gallons of water gushing into the places Viola's beloved Pokemon stood. When the deluge died down, though, all three of them seemed okay. Extremely wet, but okay.

The retaliation was not nearly as kind. Wailmer took a Seed Bomb from Gourgeist and Wingull was chilled down with a Froslass Ice Beam. Cofagrigus sent a Will O Wisp in Tentacool's direction, but the jellyfish sunk under the water and the fireball fizzled out on the surface.

Next, Wailmer went for a Bounce, leaping onto one of the raised platforms and jumping from there to crash into Gourgeist, sending both of them into the water and out of sight. Wingull harassed Cofagrigus with Supersonic, and Tentacool burst of the water behind Froslass, wrapping its' tentacles around her and dragging her into the depths.

With four of the six Pokemon out of sight, everyone's attention shifted to Wingull and Cofagrigus. The seagull was doing well to keep the coffin busy for so long, but Viola knew it was only a matter of time - Wingull was just too weak of a Pokemon to be able to last long enough to wear down a defensive wall like Cofagrigus. And while he did spend a lot of time smacking himself in confusion or missing his attacks, finally the sarcophagus Pokemon lashed out with his four ghostly hands and smacked Wingull hard into a wall, knocking it out.

KO

From the water, Tentacool appeared again, now in something of a predicament - Froslass had frozen the water around it to try and fend off Tentacool, and now the jellyfish Pokemon was lugging around a big block of ice with Froslass inside. It couldn't let go because the tips of its' two tentacles were in the ice as well. Seeing an oppurtunity, it dragged its' burden over to the reeling Cofagrigus, jumped from the water, and swung for the fences, clobbering Cofagrigus with his own teammate. Froslass was protected by being in the ice, but Cofagrigus was less lucky, keeling over and collapsing into the water with swirls in his eyes.

KO

The impact of the attack had shattered the ice, and Froslass floated away quickly before Tentacool could react and attack again. Nearby, Wailer surfaced with bulging cheeks and spat Gourgeist out of its mouth at Froslass. The ice spirit quickly dodged away, avoiding being part of a second friendly fire KO. Gourgeist skipped across the water like a skipping stone before sinking. Both of Top Brass' Pokemon then charged at Froslass.

"TWO ON ONE. ADVANTAGE HOENN."

Unfortunately for Top Brass, he hadn't done his research on Pokemon attacks. A crackle of electricity was all the warning the Pokemon got before Froslass unleashed a Thunderbolt. Wailmer went belly-up, floating unconscious, while Tentacool seemed to tank the hit and crawled onto a platform to get away from the electrified water.

KO

Gourgeist emerged, able to solidly handle getting caught in the electric attack. The pumpkin was paralyzed, however, and couldn't do much besides float idly in the water. Froslass saw this and looked somewhat sheepish. The distraction was enough, and Tentacool unleashed a Hydro Pump that sent Froslass into the drink once again, this time to be knocked out.

KO

Tentacool slipped into the water and began to close in on Gourgeist, readying a Sludge Bomb that would finish the match. But just before it could fire, Gourgeist vanished into a purple portal that quickly closed behind it. Tentacool began searching nervously for its' opponent, trying to avoid the incoming Phantom Force attack, but that move always seems to strike when the target least expects it.

The portal appeared directly on top of Tentacool, and Gourgeist fell out. She was still stunned by paralysis, but she didn't have to move for her sheer bulk to take out the weakened Tentacool.

Good thing Viola caught a super-size one!

KO

"SADNESS AND WOE. HOENN IS OVER." Top Brass said, slouching. "YOU RECEIVE THE TRUMPET BADGE."

BADGE GET

"Two badges already. I am a better trainer than I had thought."

"Thank goodness. Let's get back to the car ASAP and think about dry things."

(Author's Note: I can already tell trying to come up with six more full-length gym battles is going to be like pulling teeth, especially with the GB Ensemble Royal Rumble looming, so expect Part 3 to be something of a montage. The whole point of this story is the eighth gym, anyway...)
