College Reunion

On the outskirts of Agama, in the quietest corner of the city, two space aliens tried their best to look inconspicuous as they walked off the street, into an alley, and behind a run-down old building that still had signs in the windows but certainly didn't look it was open for business any time recently. Some ne'er-do-well had spraypainted "TOURISTS SUCK" on the side of the building in red. The only sound was the burbling of one of the city's many canals as it ran behind the building, blocked off here by a fence put up to keep any refuse from falling in.

"Is this the place?" asked Baltan Seijin, more to himself than anything else as he took in his surroundings.

"Certainly looks like it." Kauket huffed in mild disgust at the run-down and dirty area as she crossed her arms. Her species was referred to as 'Flatwoods Monsters' by people of Earth. She resented being called a monster, but in the long run didn't really care that much. It had been 70 years since the day she'd acquired that moniker. A lifetime for a human, but not much for her. By the 80s or so she'd already gotten over it. "I still don't like this at all. Feels like a setup."

"Aw, c'mon! My ol' college buddy would never pull a fast one on me like that! He's a good egg."

"He's wanted in seven galaxies for questioning regarding the disappearance of my father's fortune."

"Would you buy that he's a mediocre egg?" Baltan offered. Kauket didn't dignify him with a response, instead flipping open a small communicator device and peering at it. The gadget worked similarly to an Earth smartphone, and could even link up to them, but the technology was very different. It ran on a powerful solar battery, and could communicate across vast distances, but Kauket was currently using it as a mere watch to check the time. As she suspected, she and Baltan were punctual. It was his friend who was late.

Kauket's Mission

"So, uh... Kauket, is it? Yes, Kauket. Welcome. What can we do for you?"

"I'm applying for a travel grant."

"Ah! What's the story?"

"Well, I'm very interested in making a trip, but I'm no longer eligible for student assistance since I've gone twice already. I was told there's a new program that assists older and more frequent travelers."

"That's right. We recently worked out a solution that cuts fuel costs in half. We look through the applications and pair an experienced traveler with a newcomer. You will provide transportation and guidance for a young one who's never traveled to another planet."

"That sounds acceptable."

"Remember, of course, that it's not all fun and games. You can of course engage in recreational activities, but you'll be expected to provide a report about the planet and its people to help build up our knowledge of the universe."

"Absolutely, sir. Where do I sign?"

"Here, let me get the papers ready..."

"Kauket, this is Baltan. He'll be your travel partner."

"Hello there."

"Hi, Crockit!"

"...It's Kauket."

"Hey, hey... hey. Hey.

Heyyy."

"What? What is it?!"

"Does your ship have a vending machine? I get hungry on long trips."

"Um, no."

"Okay, then you gotta excuse me for a sec while I stock up! Be right back! HOHOHOHOHO"

"...

Can I-"

"No, you cannot switch partners for being annoying. Please file any serious complaints to our email address. And be patient with Baltan, he's only 47."

"Does he have to do a report, too?"

"Yes, but it's separate from yours."

"Thank freaking god."

"WE'RE WHALERS ON THE MOON, WE CARRY A HARPOON-"

"BALTAN SO HELP ME I WILL TURN THIS SHIP AROUND-"

Kauket

They called me Kauket. It was a nice name, so I kept it.

It means darkness, chaos, the unknown. I suppose I was a fairly frightening sight, even if I did... ugh, I can't believe I'm really going back to this old saw, but yes, I came in peace. *sigh*

They depicted me in their heiroglyphs as a woman with the head of a cobra. It's an odd interpretation, but I'll take it. Snakes are one of the more interesting creatures on this planet.

I noticed they were having difficulties in their construction of large stone monuments. I was young and eager to forge good tidings between worlds, so I offered my services. It took some convincing to get them to trust me, but when they saw what I could do, they were all too happy to accept my aid.
