The Deleter: I had also been listening to eidolon playtest, and decided that these off-brand Stands would be a fun thing to have as an opponent for the Persona users - much more extreme and varied powersets compared to the restrained Pokémon-style skills of the phantom thieves
The Deleter: So I then did the absolute brain genius move of going "Phantom Thieves - evil phantom thieves? - PT - I need a song or band name that works here"
The Deleter: And then I remembered a British drum and bass act called Pendulum I used to listen to an embarrassing amount of
The Deleter: For those who don't remember, this song was used in the introduction for zoofights 4
Gooper Blooper: I had considered bringing back The Other Side for Hardcore Prawn's return in Season 9!
Gooper Blooper: I think I just forgot to use it rather than actively choosing to drop it
The Deleter: And so, Benitagang started off as a villainous group called the Pendulum Team
The Deleter: Yes, sweet marshmallowy Benita was gonna be a villain

Gooper Blooper: I did pick up on some possible parallels early in the season that made it look like the two groups might get pitted against each other
The Deleter: The only thing that remains of that idea is their shared eidolon themes, named after pendulum songs/albums

The Deleter: Originally they were an incredibly pro-Agaman, anti-everybody else activist/criminal group that wanted to exploit the Jails - Benita and her friend group were having their fears of what would happen to their culture and people if their city opened up to the world being manipulated by the character that eventually became Lola (Eidolon grandma)
The Deleter: So they would use the Jails to control people into doing what they wanted, usurping the person who's jail it was with maybe deadly consequences for the monarch
Jumpropeman: dang, this is a twist and a half
The Deleter: This would put them into conflict with the thieves - pendulum team would believe that the thieves, by punishing bad actors but rarely changing systems, didn't do enough and that violence was the only option, whereas the thieves would be obviously horrified by the pendulum team's willingness to use basically mind control to achieve their goals
The Deleter: There were scenes in my head of the character that became Cali trapping the thieves in a ring of paintings she'd animate to fight them
The Deleter: But as I started playing with just Benita and slowly introducing others, uh
The Deleter: Jenny happened
The Deleter: And everything went just, off the rails lmao
Gooper Blooper: So when Brine Jenny ran into Benita, that wasn't just one villain who got instantly neutralized

The Deleter: That, combined with the general atmosphere of how RP is and my rapidly decreasing enthusiasm for the phantom thieves characters, made me basically abandon that part of the plot all together

RubyChao: ohhh, and i'm guessing that's part of why you were running into so much trouble with the plot? because without the twist you just didn't have a driving desire to do it

The Deleter: Partly that it would be hammering on themes I already did in a more positive way with Aiko
The Deleter: And partly that I could not face up to writing ryuji saying FOR REAL for the billionth time

The Deleter: The thieves were all tapped out for me as characters, barring a thing I wanted to do where makoto would have an unrequited crush on ryuji and that would spin into polyamory, a thing I did with benitagang anyway lol
The Deleter: But now I look at it, it looks very much like turning ryuji into poochie

The Deleter: Ryuji died on the way back to his favourite ramen joint
RubyChao: anyhow, yeah, sometimes you just don't know you're tapped out on a character until you write them
RubyChao: happened to me with a couple last year
The Deleter: So there's a couple of extra bits here I wanna cover
The Deleter: The character of Lola didn't become what she was until maybe a day or two before I posted her, although I may have discussed this with Bree earlier I don't remember the timeline too much. I had always imagined benitagang/pendulum team having a mentor figure - in fact, I basically wrote and assigned them roles straight from the wording of eidolon's playbooks
The Deleter: The mentor character would be egging them on to do more violent acts. Her Eidolon would be called Propane Nightmare, a flaming human figure that could burn abstract concepts such as time, distance, and the walls between reality (which is how benitagang would get into the jails in the first place)
The Deleter: Actually here's the full list:
The Deleter: Blood Sugar - can see two timelines simultaneously, blood and sugar. Blood is violent and dramatic, Sugar is safe and stagnant. The user can then collapse the timelines down to their chosen one. (Navigator playbook - Blood Sugar can perfectly sense two distinct futures in the area around it).
Vanguard - The Tempest is a figure hidden in a storm cloud. It can freely zap anybody who enters the cloud but is powerless beyond it. User is Emily Cotilla, Bettina's girlfriend and punch lady.
Infiltrator - Midnight Runner can hide in shadows and empower any weapons to be cool cyberpunk versions of themselves. User is Kroos.
Virtuoso - Betina Rosa Bezerra is a native of Agama, and joined because she is scared that the outside world will crush Agama and turn it into any other old city. Her Eidolon, In Silico, is a real physical laptop with 3d modelling software installed. When she uses it, she can conjure the things she models into reality.
Alchemist- Delfina has Hold Your Colour, which can turn paintings of things into a copy of the thing depicted in the painting.
Inhuman/team leader: Propane Nightmares emits fire that can burn abstract concepts.
Beast: Fat of the Land, renamed Under the Waves, is a colony of local crabs that can turn other objects into crabs.
The Deleter: Cali was called delfina at one point
The Deleter: Also Benita was Betina???
The Deleter: Also Kroos was there from the start
The Deleter: Ko ko dai yo
The Deleter: Also, fun fact - I had always planned for fat of the land to have a human form at some point! Originally it was going to work like Morgana where she would become a girl only in the metaverse/undertow, but then I entered the crabs in the brawl, and then I remembered eidolon had a mechanic where if you died you met death and made a bargain with them
The Deleter: So that just, carried over
Gooper Blooper: Neat, I thought crab-to-human was an on the fly idea
The Deleter: Real Girl was always on the cards
The Deleter: I had planned to have her fight Junpei and turn him into crabs
Jumpropeman: why must the good ones always become human...

The Deleter: So the big one here is, uh, Téo
Gooper Blooper: Oh yeah, re: Kroos - was this the plan for her from the beginning? Like last year, when she was popping up alone but having secret communications with others?
Jumpropeman: i think you did really well with teo of what we saw of them
Gooper Blooper: I remember thinking maybe she was a Salvager at the time
Jumpropeman: a character with a clear mind behind them
The Deleter: It wasn't! Originally she was meant to be part of the salvagers, but I flaked out that year and never finished her plotline

The Deleter: So my idea was she ended up here scared and alone and would actually be the first Jail encountered, where the thieves would explore a dead jungle and would eventually fight her as a giant zombie/doll thing that stalked them
The Deleter: And then pendulum team would rescue her and fold her into the group
The Deleter: But after first contact with Jenny, and with ditching the pendulum team idea, Kroos was now just there
The Deleter: She ran away and found acceptance in Cielito Lindo
RubyChao: the kroos is not loose
The Deleter: So, back to Téo. As you can tell from my notes above, I didn't actually have a concept for who they were. In fact, the whole thing just began with Blood Sugar as an Eidolon user messing with people, and then when I hit upon pendulum team I immediately folded them into that. But I had no conception of who they were until I was partway through Benita's early appearance
The Deleter: Benita, Cali, Emily and Fat of the Land were strongest in my head, but Téo was created almost entirely on the fly
Harpy: almost tempted for troy to shout "SO DO I GOTTA PHANTOM THIEF OR SOMETHING?!? i don't know how to do that"

iKomodo: I ended up not doing it because a) it would require me to read almost every seuss story in existence and i’m not putting in that much effort for a gag character
iKomodo: And b) it was far too tempting to have him scream about eggs and shout woomf a lot
iKomodo: Also i feel like there’s people on here more suited to playing that kind of character than I am? It just didn’t feel like a very SK character in the end

+ Intricate combat system with a lot of potential character combinations (56 characters total, party size is 12 with 8 in the back and 4 active characters in the front)
+ Amusing dialogue and pandering between characters while still being true to the canon personalities
+ Characters are mostly balanced well enough that you can just use your favorite character(s) the entire game
+ Tenshi dual-wielding swords
+ Extremely high amount of farming possible, especially in the post game areas
+ An actually infinite post game area to farm in
