GB's Vidya 2013: Year In Review
Last year I made the twenty-one post series "GB's 100 Games", wherein I gave short writeups of 100 games I had beaten that I considered to be good or better. Since then, I've beaten over a dozen more video games. I've decided to make a sequel of sorts to 100 Games in the form of a "Year In Review" that gives writeups on every game I beat this year. In addition to that, I'll be putting the games in a rough ranking. Remember, the game can be released in any year, and I can first acquire the game in any year - as long as I first finished the game in 2013, it qualifies for the list.
First, however, to get them out of the way...
Unranked: A Horde of Atari Games
Trying to place all the new Atari 2600 games I played this year would be far too difficult. It's hard enough ranking such old games alongside modern ones as it is - with this many, it'd just be a pain and the list would be littered with them, so they all get shoved here.
Games in bold were played on an actual Atari 2600 with a cartridge. Games in italics were played on my Atari Flashback plug-and-play system.
Atari Climber - A game similar in some respects to Donkey Kong. You must climb from the bottom of the stage to the top, avoiding hazards and scoring points.
Atlantis - You control three cannons and try to shoot down flying ships that want to bomb your city. The cannons cannot aim or move, so timing is literally everything. Nice graphics for the 2600.
Demon Attack - A very similar game to Phoenix. Demon Attack is a static shooter in which you fight wave after wave of "demons". They come in many shapes, but they mostly behave the same.
Dragonfire - In this medieval quest, you alternate between two screens. The first screen is about jumping over and ducking under fireballs to reach a castle. Once there, you gather treasure for points while dodging the attacks of an angry dragon.
Off the Wall - I've never been good at Breakout-type games. Off the Wall is not an exception.
Secret Quest - One of the rare games on Atari that cries out for instructions. I can't give this Zeldaesque game a fair shake because I didn't know what to do a few levels in.
Space Jockey - Space Jockey is hurt by technical limitations - only three enemies are onscreen at once, making the game far too dull. A difficulty option to make the enemies move randomly may help your experience somewhat.
Video Checkers - Not sure how I'm supposed to win. The computer seems to counter my every move. Then again, I don't play much checkers.
Video Chess - Same problem - the computer consistently outfoxed me even on the lowest difficulty. I played chess a lot back in elementary school, and I don't remember being this bad at it.
Yar's Revenge - One of the strongest Atari games I've played. Yar's is more complicated than most Atari games, but it can be figured out pretty quickly, and it's a lot of fun. Once upon a time I had a Game Boy Color version of this game, but I wasn't any good at it and wound up selling the cartridge in a yard sale.

The Children Were Nestled All Snug in Their Beds
"Ahhhhh... Bliss. Pure bliss." Gloria announced happily to no one in particular.
She was alone in a large library.Rain gently pattered against the windows. Surrounding her were tall shelves of books. All in all, it was much like her library back home in Manhattan, complete with solitude. Except...
Except that the books were from all around the world, many of them hundreds of years old. Their quality was amazing given their age, but they still had that wonderful musty old-book smell. Best of all, even though they weren't all written in English, Gloria held in her pocket a shining gem called the Rosetta Stone, which allowed her to read any language. French, German, Japanese, Chinese, Latin, Lufenian... no book could escape her now.
She sank back into a large, comfortable recliner, put up her feet, popped a small chocolate in her mouth to suck on, and cracked open a bestiary of monsters written over five hundred years ago.

Triple S: The Spacetime Beam, also known as the Reset Beam, is a beam used in Super Metroid to cause a glitch that will reset the game. This doesn't reset the game as a normal reset; instead it causes all bosses to respawn and all upgrades to be reset, as well as all doors that were a different color than blue
Triple S: This is canon, Samus can change time
RubyChao: 2014 plot: Samus tries to go back in time to make herself not a jobber
RubyChao: It results in her creating the jobbing in the first place
SteelKomodo: XD
Triple S: Samus uses Spacetime Beam. Lord, Sentinels, Fiends, and every other threat respawns
Triple S: BOSS RUSH

Why I'm Not A Regular PC Gamer
So, once again, I'm unable to play Beat Hazard. I tried to start the game and was rewarded with an eternal black screen.
Now, where I come from, when you want to play a video game you put the game in the system, turn it on, and begin playing. There's no updates, there's no surveys, there's much less waiting and loading, and there's NO CRASHES. I don't have to cross my fingers and pray every time I turn on my 3DS in hopes that Pokemon Y will boot - it boots 100 percent of the time, in seconds, and in less than sixty seconds after turning the system on I'm playing my game. Even my Atari and Genesis are more reliable, and they aren't 100% - I might have to wiggle the cartridge or blow on it, but at least it doesn't take five minutes to reboot. Console games that crash are usually either extremely old/dirty/corrupted or terribly coded shit-piles, but when I play PC it's just par for the course.
This is the biggest problem I have always had with PC gaming. There are four PC games I have spent great amounts of time with - Robot Wars: Arenas of Destruction, RPG Maker XP, Streets of Rage Remake, and Beat Hazard. I love these games and three of them are great at taking advantage of the fact they're on PC by using customization features that are hard or impossible to use on normal consoles, like importing your computer's graphics or music. But three of these four games are unreliable, with problems I have to wrestle with every time I play them, sometimes keeping me from playing altogether. Beat Hazard often fails to boot. Robot Wars has the same issue, and also has sound problems. Nothing about my system setup changed between these games working perfectly and them turning into gambles. RPG Maker XP, meanwhile, will crash 100% of the time when playtesting a project unless I use an annoying workaround that shouldn't be needed involving constantly editing and re-saving a Notepad file.
These problems are not acceptable. I understand things like not having a powerful enough system to run such-and-such, but here I am unable to run games I could run fine a few months or years ago on the same system. I KNOW my system can run these games, because it's run them dozens of times. So why don't they work now? It's worse when they fail to work, then work again, and then fail again. That's even MORE unacceptable! Now it's just randomly crashing for no reason! My GameCube doesn't just decide it can't play Skies of Arcadia today, that's nonsense!
I can't rely on it at all. Every time I play a PC game I have to treat it like I may never get to play it again. Until PC gaming lets me play my games 100 percent of the time guaranteed like a console would, I can only see it as a novelty and occasional source for games I can't otherwise play, not a "real" gaming system I get new games from regularly, and certainly not something I spend more than pocket change on for new games. It's far too risky to pay for a full-price game if I don't even know if it will boot.
PC Land seems nice and all, but it won't let me appreciate it properly. I might get a new computer in a year or two. It might make Steam more reliable, but it might lock me out of Robot Wars or RPG Maker. Who knows for sure? I don't.

Chatzy Madness Volume 92: Put Goku In
Old King Titty: Ten years in the aftermath of an attack caused by turning a United States satellite weapon against the nation, much of the country lays in ruins. The severe loss of industry, infrastructure, and capital to rebuild has taken the government from one of the most elite nations in the world to third-world status. This results in a weakened military and exposure to invasion, which comes in the form of a collective of South American governments called "The Federation" (the ones who were also responsible for bringing this on the US in the first place). After ten years of occupation by The Federation, what remains of the US special forces are brought together to become the "Ghosts", whose mission is to use whatever means necessary to defend the tattered remains of the US.
Old King Titty: They're going to lengths of odds-overcoming that would make John Cena embarrassed.
---
The Deleter: here's a tip for you folks
The Deleter: do not buy your wireless equipment from tp-link
The Deleter: they are, and i quote, all raging piles of excrement
---
Old King Titty: >asking chatzy
Saberwulf: fuck chatzy nobody ever listens to it
SteelKomodo: yeah, ever since he started drinking his advice has been useless
RubyChao: the only hope is an intervention
RubyChao: we've got to get chatzy off the bottle

Chatsephine joined the chat
Chatsephine: Glurrrrrrrg.
CleverMantis: Evening, sunshine. Whaddya thankful for?
Chatsephine: I'm thankful for antacid
CleverMantis: hahahahaha
Chatsephine: If you think Mom went all-out LAST year, that's nothing compared to the effort she put in now that the whole family is back together
Chatsephine: An endless sea of potatoes
Chatsephine: There's no way turkeys can naturally reach that size
CleverMantis: Sounds like a hell of a time. Too bad I couldn't be there.
CleverMantis: What's everyone else thankful for over there? I'm curious.
Chatsephine: Gloria's thankful she doesn't have any jeans in her wardrobe
Chatsephine: Ariel's thankful she's not a vegetarian
Chatsephine: Sarah's thankful for Alex again
Chatsephine: Mom is, of course, thankful for our family's good health. Dad is thankful for all of us.
Chatsephine: This is a wild shot in the dark, but I think Skeiron's thankful for loaves of bread.
CleverMantis: Are you thankful for Dirk? Eh?

Chatzy Madness Volume 88: Jumpropeman Makes Spy's Day
Lateberwulf: Did you know hippo sweat is pink?
Lateberwulf: Other animal protips: Cows produce 100 liters of saliva a day. Eels are dark because they tan too much. The lemurs on the island of Madagascar have 2 tongues. And my favorite, a Koala's appendix is about 2 meters long.
Lateberwulf: A talking bean that looks like a dog taught me those
Lateberwulf: Did you know I can control the muscles in my eyeballs and make them rapidly shake in place? It's a great way to freak people out
Lateberwulf: Carrots has these: good Health and okay taste
Lateberwulf: You know, when I'm in my forties and a published author, I'm gonna be in an interview for the newest Hubverse MMO and in the middle of a discussion on adapting the setting I'll remember this
Lateberwulf: "So one of the things I'm personally excited about is the merchant class. Obviously, we're using David Wulf as an archetype—FUCKING HELL"
Lateberwulf: Kotaku will never speak to me again
Lateberwulf: Why the fuck am I awake good night

This Is Canon: Miscellaneous RP Fun Facts
This post contains various little details and things I've thought of concerning my RP characters that never (or almost never) came up in day-to-day roleplaying. Some of it has been stated in Chatzy before, but this post serves as a more permanent place. There's also some Cutting Room Floor-esque behind-the-scenes stuff.

The Deleter: The Luchacabra Fighters Chupacabras have one hell of an inferiority complex. They get no press outside of crappy Syfy “monster hunter” shows and Mexican tabloids, are compared to actual mangy dogs, and nobody has even bothered to do a convincing Chupacabra hoax which is obviously the biggest indicator of cryptid fame. Plus, “Goat Sucker”? That's like, the worst name ever. So, they decided if nobody will give them respect, they'll take it. So, a bunch of Chupacabras got together, learned the noble fighting art of Lucha Libre, and now go around the world wrestling more famous and likeable monsters into submission with flying arm-bars and the Goat Slaying Grand-slam.

Cornwind Evil: I wandered into a Canadian Tire because I was bored
Cornwind Evil: This was like...2002?
Cornwind Evil: No, 2003
Cornwind Evil: Anyway, they had a small toys section
Cornwind Evil: And I discovered it was basically all four year old Batman and Robin (the movie) toys
Cornwind Evil: And worse, it was all the mooks that Mr. Freeze had, called Frostbite
Jumpropeman: oh hey Atronach :V
Cornwind Evil: It was just so sad. This tiny little toy section in a store that's mainly supposed to sell stuff like automobile supplies
Cornwind Evil: Almost entirely composed of Frostbite toys
Jumpropeman: *Victor buys them all, gives them to our Frostbite*
Cornwind Evil: Just like nine or ten action figures of the mook of an unpopular movie
Jumpropeman: "This is not a gift I have any use for"
Cornwind Evil: It was like a modern version of the Isle of Misfit Toys
Jumpropeman: one thing I liked about the Mook toys is you could make up your own character
Jumpropeman: Batman had to be batman
Jumpropeman: but I had a generic indian toy that kept breaking, and soon he evolved into a severely handicapped but capable Native American... although the toy did have white skin >_>
Jumpropeman: I wrapped actual medical tape over where he lost his arm
Draco: I had a knockoff GI Joe who had a neon green bike helmet, pink sunglasses, swim shoes, a neon blue vest, and pants to match the helmet. I called him the French Ninja Biker and he was the world's greatest white belt. He could even beat some orange belts.

Game Room: Laura
Today we're going to be looking at a game aimed primarily at children, and I will be keeping that in mind as I review. Said game is Laura, which released for the Game Boy Color in 2000. I tried out this game because of the strange name and screenshots that told very little about what it actually was. I wound up finding a game that was meant to be played by young girls, and it was inoffensive enough that I plowed through the whole thing in two days. Read on for details.

RubyChao: but then who is the daddy
Jumpropeman: Lord Fatcrab x edyth
---
Cornwind Evil: Another friend of mine are discussing the endgame stages of my D&D campaign
Cornwind Evil: Where his character was damned by her father and when she dies she'll fight in an eternal war because her soul belongs to Asmodeus and stuff
Cornwind Evil: And I say "We should break the contract!"
Cornwind Evil: And he says 'Well the Nine Hells are all Lawful Evil, it'd be like an immensely complicated legal process..."
Cornwind Evil: "Then we do it like Phoenix Wright!"

Gooper Blooper: Mr. Bones is Captain Bones' brother
RedSpy: But where does Kaptain Skurvy fit into this?
Gooper Blooper: Since Mr. Bones and Captain Bones are both apparently human skeletons, it's safe to say Captain Skurvy is unrelated unless Kremlings are transformed humans
Gooper Blooper: It's funny - one became a bloodthirsty pirate but eventually mellowed and decided to start teaching people math. The other was a classy gentleman, but he descended into madness, building amusement park torture machines
SteelKomodo: XD
RedSpy: Pffffffft this is canon
SteelKomodo: Captain Bones doesn't really talk about him
SteelKomodo: all you get from him is a "he bides fine", and thats it
SteelKomodo: why do you think Cap Bones has no treasure in his ship? it all went to paying Mr. Bone's bail time after time
RedSpy: Well of course Mr. Bones keeps needing bail
RedSpy: They always send him to rehab
RedSpy: But he just runs off, shouting that the ride never stops
Gooper Blooper: "Hey man have a smoke of this. Shit'll give you a wild ride."
SteelKomodo: XD
Gooper Blooper: Okay new theory
Gooper Blooper: Mr. Bones is in fact an incredibly dull and boring person. He actually believes Mr. Bones' Wild Ride is an amazing, exciting thrill because it is to him. It lasts a long time because he's undead and doesn't comprehend mortals any more.
SteelKomodo: ...D:
Gooper Blooper: So he doesn't grasp that they'd prefer a shorter ride
Gooper Blooper: Because, hey, he's dead and doesn't eat. He has time.
Gooper Blooper: Doesn't explain the drowning pool at the end though
RedSpy: That's where he dumps them if they're rude

Anyone Remember Pogs?
I found a bag of pogs at a yard sale for a quarter yesterday. I never collected pogs as a kid but they were everywhere in the early 90s so I think I must have had a few floating around.
In any case, I bought the bag because I love dumb cheap retro stuff. Let's meet the pogs.
The pogs can be divided into a number of different sets, some more obvious than others. Shown above is the biggest set and the only one with an obvious name: Cyberdudes. Cyberdudes is a bunch of pogs with demented mid-90s-style artwork revolving around a bunch of computer puns. There are some obvious ones like Floppy Drive and Mega Byte, but others aren't even really puns, like Terminally Nuts. My favorite is Outdated System, considering these pogs (excuse me, sorry, they're branded on the back as 'Silly Slammers') were made in 1994. It's like watching that one song in The Brave Little Toaster where all the 80s kitsch appliances sing to the main characters about how obsolete they are.
Pog Count: 18 (including 1 duplicate)

The Deleter: it is palpable
The Deleter: also nice one, hope you have a good time and if you don't then punch an anime and make up for it
SteelKomodo: ey wulf, have a good time!
Saberwulf: Seriously though, excited as fuck. My friend just has to make sure her parents are okay with it and then we're totally good. Though she's adamant on paying for her ticket and bus fare and I'm just like you son of a bitch I'm gonna buy you something that costs like $200 to fuck with you
Saberwulf: ANGRILY GENEROUS

Chatzy Madness Volume 69: Free Bags of Children
Harpy: anyway, i'm kind of scared of that whole giant group at Facility H, so I'm trying to find a more pacifistic way of handling it
Harpy: finally, Carlos does something else
Gooper Blooper: Don't worry Harpy
Gooper Blooper: I'm raising the stakes appropriately
Gooper Blooper: If they bring an army, so do we
Harpy: then I imagining Ariel lifting giant steaks
SteelKomodo: ...eeeek
Gooper Blooper: MIGHTY ARIEL
Gooper Blooper: Can Ariel lift a steak so big even Josephine cannot eat it
Harpy: Alex might be able to help a bit with that
Harpy: the army I mean, not the steak
Gooper Blooper: what, not both?

Cornwind Evil: It's time for more 'Weird Dreams With Cornwind'
SteelKomodo: oh boy D:
Cornwind Evil: In MMO's, you are given quests to do stuff
SteelKomodo: of course
Cornwind Evil: So I dreamed that real life had something where every year we were given quests
Cornwind Evil: And last year (in the dream) I did some quests for some weirdo I will call Mr. Centipede. That was not actually his name but it is what I will call him.
Harpy: if we were given quests every year, I would clearly do quests for Sir Pantsalot
Cornwind Evil: Anyway, the idea is since its a new year the quest givers will have new reQuests
Cornwind Evil: It is a world of quests
SteelKomodo: queeeeests
Cornwind Evil: But not The World Of Quest
SteelKomodo: Poor Quest :P
Cornwind Evil: Anyway, Mr. Centipede wants the EXACT SAME THINGS as last year
Cornwind Evil: Which I think was some apples and a bag of potatoes
SteelKomodo: ...what a jerk D:<
Cornwind Evil: Anyway it's one of those weird dreams where you alternate between observing/directing events and being in them
SteelKomodo: i've had those
Cornwind Evil: Anyway, once I get the things I go inside Mr. Centipede's house
Cornwind Evil: And basically it's a nightmare Wonderland
Cornwind Evil: And its weird.
Cornwind Evil: The thing that comes into my head is 'Jesus Christ I'm going to die.'
Cornwind Evil: Not in a 'Mr. Centipede is dangerous and wishes me harm' sense
Cornwind Evil: But in a 'Dear god I am doing favors for an alien or otherdimensional being who is trying to pretend to be human to blend in and getting WAY TOO MANY THINGS OFF AND WRONG' way
Cornwind Evil: 'And he is going to shoot me because he doesn't understand how things work or something'
Cornwind Evil: That's the part I really remember. That Mr. Centipede wasn't just incredibly weird, but something pretending to be human
SteelKomodo: eek D:
Cornwind Evil: It's probably from me interacting with M Sheep a lot
Cornwind Evil: He's fond of those sorts of things

SteelKomodo: yes, it is
Gooper Blooper: eggman the feminist
Harpy: that sounds
Harpy: odd to see in the same sentence together
Harpy: does that mean he does activist work while he's busy not trying to take over the world?
Harpy: or does he want to take over the world so that women can finally have equal rights?
Gooper Blooper: hahaha, the VGCW wiki found the image and is using it to say that Eggman supports the WVGCW
Spy OMac: Eggman founded the Society
Gooper Blooper: The Practice breaks up because Wily's a chauvinist with only one female robot master
Spy OMac: And that was a DLN anyway

Monster Mash: Loser's League, Battle 3
We're back! And we have a lot to be thankful for. No civilians were hurt in that last battle, and there was minimal property damage. Most importantly, it's over. And with that out of the way, we can move on to the third and final battle of the Loser's League qualifiers!

Monster Mash: Loser's League - Iron Maiden vs. Chupacabrain
"Good evening, Horrifying Monster Warfare Attendees! Reiko Atari here, your eye in the sky for Monster Mash's Loser's League! We are LIVE above Maine's forests, on the outskirts of a lovely town by the name of Ludlow. We've taken appropriate precautions - The town has been evacuated and a flotilla of jeeps led by our finest tank, the M-56 Discipline, plan on keeping order and ensuring tonight's contestants focus their fighting on themselves. We really don't need any more lawsuits.
it looks like they've just dropped off Private Spinneret. More news as it breaks!"

Widow Maker's Game Room 5: Robot Legions
"And we're back! It's been a while, but I'm here with another game review. Today we're going to be delving into the fascinating world of Xbox Live Indie Games. It has a reputation for being a terrible service full of short, lame, copycat bugfests, but any platform with this few barriers for entry is going to require some sifting to get to the good stuff. First up from the indies is Robot Legions. With me today as my special guest is Celestia Canicco, mother of a thousand roleplay characters."
"So this is that Xbox 360 all the kids are playing these days? Where's the cartridge slot?"
"It uses discs."
"Ohhh!"
"How you can be such a whiz at robotics and yet such a dullard at modern trends is beyond me."

Monster Mash: Loser's League, Battle 2
Boy, we sure are glad the Great Canadian Aquarium is relocating. Nobody wants to clean up the mess Primus Pilus and Estafador made. We've got what's left of the winner safely in storage, awaiting upgrades, but enough about him. It's time to meet the next two beasts that will battle for your entertainment!

Monster Mash: Loser's League - Primus Pilus vs Estafador
"Good evening, Mutant Animal Combat Enthusiasts, because constantly throwing around "sports fans" gets repetitive! My name is Reiko Atari, and I'm your eye in the sky for today's thrilling battle between Primus Pilus, a fiery skeleton that was once a Dinoshark, and Estafador, an enormous brute of a shark stuffed with piranhas and the essence of the undead! Should be fun! I've got my chopper positioned over The Great Canadian Aquarium, and it's a great vantage point to bring the action to you folks at home!"

Monster Mash: Loser's League, Battle 1
Greetings, Sports Fans!
As Monster Mash fans no doubt know, Greentech Corporation has partnered with everyone's new favorite animal-battling company to bring you EVEN MORE animal brawls! Greentech is an expert in life reanimation, monster wrangling, and not cringing when witnessing something really gross, so we are a perfect choice to hold THE LOSER'S LEAGUE!
Yes, the Loser's League. Just because six of the twelve monsters competing in Monster Mash were brained, squashed, or fed to giant plants does not mean they're unsalvageable! Our crack team of doctors, surgeons, back-alley quacks, mechanics, roboticists, necromancers, alternative healers, and white mages are hard at work breathing life back into the six beasts that failed to win the first round. Of course, sometimes we get lucky and don't have to do anything to revive a monster. You'll see what I mean soon.
Voting works much the same as in Round 1. State your vote and present your case as to why you think your pick will triumph. The votes will be Tractored and a winner will emerge to move on deeper into the tournament!
Let's meet today's contestants...

Legalized Gambling For Children 14 Years Later
I have right here ten packs of eight cards each from the Topps "Pokemon: The First Movie" trading card set. I am quite a ways from a complete set, but I do have over half the cards. With eighty new cards to pull from these packs, I should finish this blog post substantially closer to my goal.
So, what's in this set? Here's the rundown:
-The meat of the set is a collection of 72 cards based on the original Pokemon movie and the "Pikachu's Vacation" short that aired before it. Each of the 72 cards also has a holofoil variation, and there is one holofoil in every pack - guaranteed. I am missing 17 "First Movie" cards and 7 "Pikachu's Vacation" cards.
-There are two sets of rarer cards. The first type is the "Evolution Cards" set, which consists of twelve cards featuring the Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, and Dratini families. Each of these cards can be holofoil, uniquely shaped, or ordinary. The odds of getting a unique-shaped evolution card are listed as 1 in 12 on the pack, making these little gits a real pain to gather if you want all the variations. I've managed to collect eight of the cards - I'm missing Venusaur, Charizard, Blastoise, and Dragonair.
-The third type of card is the "sticker card". On one side is a sticker, and on the other side is a piece of a picture. There are twelve sticker cards and the odds of getting one is 50/50. I don't have a single sticker card.
Miscellaneous Facts:
-These packs originally cost 1.99 each, as marked on the package. I bought the whole lot of ten for eleven bucks, so I actually got a discount here.
-Every pack has an identical design - it's a great foil wrapper with a picture of Mewtwo on it.
-The back of the package offers a bizarre sweepstakes that allows people to mail contest entries to Topps for a chance to win additional cards "at the same odds". Sweepstakes winners don't get the evolution sets or holofoils - they just get a random card. One. But then again, if you remember 1999 like I'm pretty sure it went down, that was enough for a lot of kids to enter. It's almost impossible to overstate just how huge Pokemon was for people my age in 1999.

Unfinished Business: A Look at my Pokemon Card Collection
So, as Chatzy-dwellers know, I have recently decided to make an effort to finish my old Pokemon card collections after taking stock on a whim and seeing I was quite close to finishing some of my sets.
I started collecting Pokemon cards in 1999 (like just about everyone else) and spent about a year feverishly gathering pieces of paper until they were banned at my school. With my trading outlet gone, my collecting faltered, eventually petering out entirely around 2003.
My personal criteria of what constitutes a complete set is pretty loose. Here's the basics:
1: Several card sets feature both holofoil and non-holo versions of certain cards. As long as I have one or the other, I consider that card obtained.
2: There were numerous reprints of older cards in the series. For instance, cards in the original Base Set were reprinted in Base Set 2 and the Legendary Collection. I readily accept these reprints as counting towards the total - all that matters is the card's content, especially its' art.
3: Sure, I'd love pristine, mint cards of everything, but if the only Ninetales I can find is battered and worn, then by Elohim it's going in the binder.
4: As for what sets to collect - I have limited myself to a group of sets that were all released during Pokemon's early years. Have you SEEN how many sets the TCG has now? It's utterly ridiculous. I've pared things down to a total of seven different sets - four from the TCG and three others, plus a couple promotional and bonus sets to bring the grand total of "sets" to nine.
Chatzy Madness Volume 50: King Harkinian's Hairy Legs
SteelKomodo: ...i have had a theory
SteelKomodo: this never bodes well, but here we are
SteelKomodo: you know the theory that every Link in the Legend of Zelda games is the reincarnation of the same hero?
RedSpy: mhm
SteelKomodo: This is incorrect. Every Link is the reincarnation of a pimp
RedSpy: . . . pfffffft what
RedSpy: Explain this sounds amazin
SteelKomodo: Well, consider the amount of girls he comes into contact with
SteelKomodo: a good portion of whom have shown an interest in him
SteelKomodo: Granted, one is a fish girl, one is a tree and the other is his best friend's mom (long story)
SteelKomodo: but is there any sign of him rejecting these advances?
SteelKomodo: Hell, Fi notes that he seems quite receptive to Peatrice, and despite her warning him not to tell Zelda he goes along with it
SteelKomodo: He's not trying to save Hyrule from Ganon or Vaati or whatever. His main objective, first and formost, is the hoes
SteelKomodo: I rest my case
RedSpy: Brilliance
RedSpy: He even borrows Boozer's ho train
SteelKomodo: wait, hang on, gotta elaborate a bit - Skyward Sword was the first Link, right?
RedSpy: Yush
SteelKomodo: And that link got involved with Peatrice and a lot of stuff got implied with Pipit's mom (again, long story)
SteelKomodo: so basically that Link was a pimp, and every Link since then is his reincarnation trying to top himself in the ho department
SteelKomodo: hell, the subtext of every conversation he had with a female in OoT seemed to be, as Yahtzee put it, "Fuck me"
RedSpy: Pffft
SteelKomodo: The legends call him a hero because he beats the bad guy. But what they fail to mention was that this only happened because the bad guy got in the way of his pimpin'
SteelKomodo: once again, I rest my case
RedSpy: Well, he DOES have a big phallic sword
RedSpy: That he uses to solve all his problems
Erebus: Link was just a level 20 or so Bard. Especially in Oot.
SteelKomodo: XD
SteelKomodo: also yeah, the Master Sword isn't called that without reason
SteelKomodo: wink wink nudge nudge
SteelKomodo: of course, there were setbacks - the whole thing on Koholint Island was the dream of a giant whale, and thus makes things complicated
SteelKomodo: and imagine the squabbling the Links in Four Swords had
RedSpy: Dirkfest 2011

Kauket's Mission
"So, uh... Kauket, is it? Yes, Kauket. Welcome. What can we do for you?"
"I'm applying for a travel grant."
"Ah! What's the story?"
"Well, I'm very interested in making a trip, but I'm no longer eligible for student assistance since I've gone twice already. I was told there's a new program that assists older and more frequent travelers."
"That's right. We recently worked out a solution that cuts fuel costs in half. We look through the applications and pair an experienced traveler with a newcomer. You will provide transportation and guidance for a young one who's never traveled to another planet."
"That sounds acceptable."
"Remember, of course, that it's not all fun and games. You can of course engage in recreational activities, but you'll be expected to provide a report about the planet and its people to help build up our knowledge of the universe."
"Absolutely, sir. Where do I sign?"
"Here, let me get the papers ready..."
"Kauket, this is Baltan. He'll be your travel partner."
"Hello there."
"Hi, Crockit!"
"...It's Kauket."
"Hey, hey... hey. Hey.
Heyyy."
"What? What is it?!"
"Does your ship have a vending machine? I get hungry on long trips."
"Um, no."
"Okay, then you gotta excuse me for a sec while I stock up! Be right back! HOHOHOHOHO"
"...
Can I-"
"No, you cannot switch partners for being annoying. Please file any serious complaints to our email address. And be patient with Baltan, he's only 47."
"Does he have to do a report, too?"
"Yes, but it's separate from yours."
"Thank freaking god."
"WE'RE WHALERS ON THE MOON, WE CARRY A HARPOON-"
"BALTAN SO HELP ME I WILL TURN THIS SHIP AROUND-"
